We had a very nice surprise when my Dad was contacted by Sarasota Babe Ruth to throw out the first pitch at their opening ceremonies today in honor of Grandpa (Nick) Lucas. So we ventured out to our old stompin' grounds, where we spent so many years. It sure looks different than it did when Aaron played out there 10 years ago! It was such a nice ceremony. They welcomed all the teams out onto the field and acknowledged the clubhouse with Grandpa's name on it. They mentioned many of the wonderful things Grandpa did for Babe Ruth and wanted to make sure all the kids knew what a great man he was. I could feel Grandpa smiling down from Heaven.
After they talked about my Dad's involvement in Babe Ruth (years past and current), they talked about Aaron's days as a player at Babe Ruth and at FSU as a catcher. As Dad walked out to the pitcher's mound to throw the ceremonial first pitch, he warned the catcher to watch out! I heard a few hecklers from the crowd telling the catcher to watch for the bounce! Dad got ready and FIRED the ball in to the catcher... and I'm not kidding! There was some heat on that ball!! We were so proud and know that Grandpa was too. I feel so lucky that Addison has a Great Grandfather, Grandfather, and Father who have done so much for so many. She has many honorable people to look up to. Enjoy your Saturday- ours has been a memorable one so far!
Addison enjoyed playing with her baseball before we went on the field.
